How Much Should I Pay For Shop Supplies?

This is something well overlooked when getting an estimate for mechanical repairs. Your estimate should include shop supplies because the amount you pay varies widely among repair shops. Most shops use "shop supplies" as a profit item rather for a reimbursement for actual supplies used for a particular repair. Some shops use a percentage of the total repair or some other guesstimate. Major chains program this in at their corporate headquarters as the local shop cannot change the amount. At Express Oil we only charge for what we use in increments of $5.00. So what exactly are shop supplies?

Shop supplies include the following:

  • Shop towels
  • Parts cleaning (We use an environmentally safe parts washing machine that is serviced monthly by an outside company)
  • Special lubes and greases
  • Torching or heating frozen bolts
  • Rust removers
  • Brake refinishing cutting tools
  • Disposal fees for items such as used coolant, Freon, etc.
  • Degreasers

We recently saw an invoice from a competitor for rear brakes which charged $35 for shop supplies. This is utterly ridiculous and dishonest. We would have charged $5.00-$10 for the same job depending on what we actually used.

So the next time you get a written estimate for repairs ask them to include shop supplies and you will be surprised-but not at our shop because we are always reasonable and honest. Integrity is a big part of our business.
